Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

This is a beautifully written book by one of my favorite authors. This a Historical fiction book about the revolutionary war from a slave’s view. This follows Isabel as she is sold to another owner, after she was already freed. She has to care for her younger sister who has epilepsy, or the ‘falling sickness’, and try to find a way to escape from her cruel owners who are all for the King of England. She becomes friends with another slave named Curzon, who joins the army with the promise of him being free. She has to navigate her new life while trying to survive and decide which side of the war she’ll join, how she’ll get free, and who she can trust. The sequel to this book is called Forge. Recommended for 12+.
