Countdown by Deborah Wiles

This novel is the first book in a ’60s trilogy. It follows Frannie Chapman, a sixth grader who is dealing with the threat of a nuclear war, a disappearing sister, a friend turned mean, and an uncle fighting a war in his head. Her sister is disappearing more and more, and is getting mysterious letters, her friend started ditching her, the practices of ‘duck and cover’ terrify her brother, and her uncle’s actions are embarrassing her family. An old friend who recently moved back, and her new crush, just add more trouble to the mix. This book is a great mix of good writing, great pictures, and the nuclear war from the point of view of a 6th grader. Highly recommended for 6th grade+.
